Space Force Brig. Gen. Kristin Panzenhagen Nominated for Second Star

The Space Force officer, who oversees the $13.5 billion National Security Space Launch Program, was nominated for promotion to major general, the Department of War announced July 16, 2026.

Space Force Brig. Gen. Kristin L. Panzenhagen was nominated for promotion to major general, the Department of War announced.

Panzenhagen serves as military deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The nomination advances her toward a second star and a broader role in shaping how the Space Force buys and fields launch and satellite systems. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth issued the announcement in a batch of general officer nominations on July 16, 2026 according to war.gov. The Senate must confirm the appointment before it takes effect.

Before her Pentagon assignment, Panzenhagen held four simultaneous roles as Program Executive Officer for Assured Access to Space, Commander of Space Launch Delta 45, Director of the Eastern Range, and Director of Launch and Range Operations at Space Systems Command according to ndia.org. She led the acquisition, integration, production and sustainment of the $13.5 billion National Security Space Launch Program according to ndia.org. She also directed policy and resources for the Space Force’s $30 billion Eastern and Western Range launch and missile test portfolios according to ndia.org. As commander of Space Launch Delta 45, she oversaw base infrastructure for more than 15,000 military members, civilians, contractors and dependents at Patrick Space Force Base, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Ascension Island according to ndia.org. As Director of the Eastern Range, a 15-million-square-mile area, she held final approval authority for roughly 90 launches in 2023, including Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Atlas V and Delta IV Heavy flights according to ndia.org.

Promotion to major general expands an officer’s command reach and budget authority, and the second star marks a candidate for the most senior acquisition posts in the service. The young branch stood up in 2019, and seasoned acquisition leaders remain scarce. A confirmed major general strengthens the bench overseeing multibillion-dollar launch programs. For the average reader, the programs Panzenhagen has managed carry commercial and civil stakes beyond defense. The Eastern Range clears launches from Cape Canaveral that lift government and commercial satellites, the backbone of navigation, weather forecasting and broadband service used across the country.

Panzenhagen entered the Air Force as a Distinguished Graduate of the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Purdue University in 2000 according to ndia.org. She began as an aircraft maintenance officer, later moved to developmental engineering, and deployed to Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Operations Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn according to ndia.org. Has this happened before? It has. The Space Force routinely forwards general officer nominations in batches, and Panzenhagen’s name appeared as one of several in the July 16 release according to war.gov. The Senate Armed Services Committee will consider the nomination before the full Senate votes on confirmation. A date for that vote has not been announced.

Military promotion boards have long shaped the American officer corps, as generations of officers can attest. Congress established the modern selection-board system through the Defense Officer Personnel Management Act of 1980, which set uniform rules for promotion timing and grade limits across the services. The law replaced a patchwork of service-specific practices and tied advancement to competitive boards rather than seniority alone. Officers who clear those boards, as Panzenhagen now must, move into the ranks that direct the nation’s most expensive weapons programs.
