— Donald J. Trump has vowed to shrink the U.S. Department of Education to its smallest possible size by December 2026.

Here is the full post on truthsocial: “RETURNING EDUCATION TO THE STATES PROMISES MADE PROMISES KEPT Executive Order 14242: “The Secretary of Education shall, to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law, take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities while ensuring the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.” We will put PARENTS back in charge and give them the final say. We will give our kids the high quality, PRO-AMERICAN EDUCATION they deserve.”

The graphics attached to the post set targets for headquarters staffing. Department headquarters counted 4,078 employees on January 20, 2025, then fell to 2,286 by July 1, 2026, a drop of 43.9% according to ed.gov. The plan aims for roughly 550 staff by December 2026, a cut of about 86.5%. The materials describe the December figure as the smallest extent possible absent congressional action.

The plan redistributes signature programs to five other departments. Special education, campus childcare and foreign medical programs move toward the Department of Health and Human Services, while civil rights enforcement, student privacy and desegregation work shift to the Department of Justice according to ed.gov. Workforce and K-12 programs go to the Department of Labor, with international education, student loans and other functions parceled to the State, Treasury and Interior departments.

Supporters and critics split sharply over who gains. The Trump Administration argues parents and state leaders gain control, pointing to weak results after decades of federal spending. The agency was established in 1980, and $3 trillion in taxpayer dollars later only 35% of fourth and eighth graders read proficiently in 2024 according to ed.gov. Advocates for low-income and minority students warn that dispersing enforcement could weaken protections tied to federal education law according to edtrust.org.

For the average American family, the department insists nothing changes in the near term. Grants and federal student aid remain at congressionally authorized levels, eligibility stays the same, and safeguards under ESEA, HEA, IDEA and Section 504 continue to apply according to ed.gov.

Has this happened before? No president has dismantled a Cabinet department without a vote of Congress. States such as Arkansas and Louisiana have moved authority over curriculum and standards to local boards according to arkansas.gov and according to louisiana.gov. The federal agency itself has never closed since its 1980 creation.

Congress will make the next decisive call, because full closure requires legislation lawmakers have not scheduled. A date for any congressional vote on abolishing the department has not been announced.

Cutting a Cabinet agency to a skeleton staff echoes an earlier fight. President Ronald Reagan campaigned in 1980 on abolishing the year-old Department of Education, and his administration pressed the idea through his first term. Congress declined to act, and the department survived and grew across the following four decades. Reagan left office in 1989 without eliminating it, and the agency he sought to close outlasted his presidency by more than 35 years.
