Trump Brands Democrats “Dumocrats,” Ties Socialist Turn to “Squalor, Crime, and Death”
Trump warns the Democratic Party's leftward shift threatens American citizens and predicts it will cost the party at the ballot box in the 2028 presidential race.
WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump said the Democratic Party’s hard-left turn endangers American citizens and always ends in disaster wherever socialism takes hold.

The president shared the link to an hour-long interview he gave inside the Oval Office, framing the modern Democratic Party as a warning from history. He argued that similar experiments have failed across centuries. “Go back 1,000 years, different names, but the concept of give away everything ends up in squalor, crime, and death,” Trump told Breitbart News by mentioning the source (see breitbart). “It always ends up the same way.”
Trump explained how he coined the label for his rivals, swapping a letter to mock their agenda. “You swap the E for U, and it’s over,” Trump said by mentioning the source (see breitbart). “You just swap the E for U, and you got a Dumocrat, and their policy is so stupid.”
The comments landed as establishment Democrats lost primaries to insurgent socialist challengers. Reps. Dan Goldman of New York, Adriano Espaillat of New York, and Diana DeGette of Colorado fell to leftist rivals, according to breitbart. Trump singled out Goldman, the impeachment manager who prosecuted his first impeachment, and said the winner, Brad Lander, is more radical still. “I was happy that Goldman lost, actually, because he was a real jerk,” Trump said.
The stakes fall hardest on a Democratic Party choosing between its center and its left flank ahead of 2028. Trump argued a move back to the middle would make his opponents harder to beat, a rare concession that the insurgent wing may hand him easier races. Candidates such as Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia and Texas Senate nominee James Talarico drew his fire, with Trump promoting Rep. Mike Collins as the Georgia Republican challenger. The president has long clashed with the left over spending, ideology, and cultural fights, and this exchange extends a running argument about the direction of American governance.
Has this happened before? It has. Trump has spent a decade recasting his rivals with derisive nicknames, from questioning Ossoff’s electability to targeting Gov. Gavin Newsom of California as a possible 2028 nominee, according to breitbart. He recalled intervening in a 2017 Georgia race that Ossoff lost, citing the runoff won by Karen Handel as proof his involvement can swing outcomes.
The next test rests with primary voters and, ultimately, the 2028 electorate. A date for those contests in the presidential cycle has not been announced.
The fight over the word “socialist” in American politics isn’t the first time the two parties have battled over the label. In 1912, Eugene V. Debs won about 900,000 votes as the Socialist Party candidate for president, roughly 6 percent of the total, according to britannica.com. His movement crested and then collapsed under wartime prosecutions and internal splits, and no Socialist standard-bearer ever again reached that share, a decline that reshaped how both major parties courted working-class voters for generations.
