— Donald J. Trump promoted an opinion column crediting him with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the largest edition of the tournament in history, which drew more than 6.5 million fans across three countries.

The column, written by Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House Task Force on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, appeared in Fox News and praised the president’s hospitality-driven vision by mentioning the source (see foxnews). Giuliani wrote that stadiums filled to 99.7% capacity and that fans from more than 150 countries experienced American hospitality, according to foxnews.

“Americans fell in love with the World Cup, and the world fell in love with America again,” Giuliani wrote in the column, describing the tournament as the enduring legacy of what he called the Golden Age of Sports.

The post lands as the United States prepares for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, positioning the World Cup as a template for future mega-events and a marker of the administration’s push to project national confidence.

This is Trump’s 3rd message released today. On average, Trump produces 18 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025.

The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 22 of his 447 posts over the last 30 days classified under the topic “Reposts & External Links.”

Giuliani, son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, framed the tournament as proof of American excellence. The nearly doubled attendance record came from matches spread across 16 host cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada, according to foxnews. Eleven of those host cities sat in the United States alone, and FIFA Fan Festivals welcomed another 7.7 million visitors, according to foxnews.

The stakes reach beyond sport. Giuliani cited a record economic impact, with Seattle’s Pioneer Square businesses seeing sales rise to as much as 10 times their average and Philadelphia projecting $770 million in economic impact, according to foxnews. Host cities and small businesses stood to benefit, while federal and local budgets absorbed heavy security costs. The administration deployed federal coordination teams, supported local law enforcement with $625 million in funding and invested another $500 million in counter-drone technology, according to foxnews.

The World Cup marked a return of the men’s tournament to the United States after four decades. The country last hosted the event in 1994, a tournament that set its own attendance benchmarks before this year’s edition surpassed them. Giuliani noted that Trump was the driving force behind the successful 2018 bid, according to foxnews.

The scale dwarfs recent single-nation hosts. The 2026 edition expanded to 48 teams and 16 venues across a continent, a footprint larger than the 2022 tournament in Qatar or the 2018 event in Russia.

For the average American, the tournament touched daily life through crowded downtowns, higher local sales and expanded policing capacity that officials say will outlast the final whistle. Communities that hosted matches reported spikes in restaurant and hotel traffic during the weeks of play.

This has happened before. The United States hosted the 1994 World Cup and the 1984 and 1996 Olympic Games, each drawing large crowds and generating debate over public spending versus local windfalls. Los Angeles will test that pattern again as host of the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The next decision on this legacy rests with organizers and federal planners preparing for the Los Angeles Olympics, though no date for a formal after-action report on the World Cup has been announced.

Celebrating American excellence through global sport is not new for a sitting president. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter turned the Lake Placid Winter Olympics into a Cold War stage, and the U.S. hockey team’s upset of the Soviet Union on February 22, 1980 became known as the Miracle on Ice. Carter hosted the team at the White House days later. His boycott of the Moscow Summer Games months afterward kept 65 nations home and cast a long shadow over his final year in office.
