Northrop Grumman Wins $1.84 Billion Air Force Targeting Pod Contract
The aerospace giant secured a sole-source deal to sustain and produce LITENING advanced targeting pods for the Air Force, with work running through Dec. 31, 2035.
ROLLING MEADOWS, ILLINOIS — Northrop Grumman Systems Corp., the fifth-largest contractor to the U.S. federal government, won a $1.84 billion Air Force contract to keep its LITENING targeting pods flying through the next decade, as announced on war.gov.
The ceiling, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, firm-fixed-price award covers continued sustainment, production, and modifications of the Laser Infrared Targeting and Navigation Comprehensive Advanced Targeting Pod, according to war.gov. Fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance funds of $42.9 million are being obligated at the time of award, with work performed at Rolling Meadows, Illinois, and expected to finish by Dec. 31, 2035.
“This contract was a sole source acquisition,” the Precision Attack Contracting Branch at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, said in the award notice, identifying itself as the contracting activity under reference FA8540-26-D-B001.
The LITENING pod hangs beneath fighter and bomber aircraft to identify and track targets at long range using infrared and laser sensors. Sole-source deals such as this one bypass open competition, a structure the government reserves for suppliers judged to be the only capable provider of a specialized system.
