Trump Endorses Darline Graham Nordone for South Carolina Senate Seat
Trump backs the sister of the late Lindsey Graham in the Aug. 11 Republican special primary, calling her a true American Patriot who will honor her brother's legacy.
WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump, the 47th president of the United States, endorsed Darline Graham Nordone for the U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina, backing the sister of the late Lindsey Graham to succeed her brother.
Graham Nordone accepted his request to run in the Special Republican Primary set for Aug. 11, 2026, according to the president’s post. Trump said he made the appeal during a visit she paid to the Oval Office.
Here is the full post on truthsocial: “It was my Honor to welcome now Senator Darline Graham Nordone (The sister of the Late, Great Lindsey Graham!), from the Wonderful State of South Carolina, into the Oval Office. We have known each other for a long time — She is a spectacular person, and a true American Patriot. Lindsey was one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, and his sister shares his deep love of our Country, and the State of South Carolina. During her visit, I asked Darline, for the Good of our Nation, to run for the U.S. Senate in the Special Republican Primary on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. She accepted, as there is nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother, Lindsey. Darline, who comes from an absolutely incredible family, has been a WINNER all of her life, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement in the Special Election for U.S. Senate in South Carolina — SHE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN! Trump” on August 4, 2026 at 10:45 AM ET.
This is Trump’s 4th message released today, and the last post was 0 minutes ago, and it is not part of a thread. On average, Trump produces 18 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025. The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 84 of his 460 posts over the last 30 days classified as Elections posts.
The endorsement carries weight in a solidly Republican state where the primary result often decides the general election. A Trump backing hands Graham Nordone name recognition and access to a donor network built across two presidential campaigns. Rival Republicans lose the most, because a presidential endorsement narrows the field and discourages establishment challengers from committing money and staff to a short special-election calendar.
South Carolina holds its Republican presidential primary early in the nominating calendar, a role that gives its party organization outsized influence in national politics. The state last held a competitive Senate contest when the seat now in play changed hands. Special elections there tend to draw low turnout, which magnifies the value of an early, high-profile endorsement.
For the average reader, the contest determines one of 100 seats in the U.S. Senate, the chamber that confirms federal judges, ratifies treaties and shapes tax and spending law. A single seat can decide the balance of power when the chamber is closely divided.
Trump has done this before. He issued waves of primary endorsements during the 2018, 2020 and 2022 cycles, and candidates carrying his backing frequently prevailed in Republican primaries even when party leaders preferred other contenders. The pattern has made his endorsement one of the most sought-after assets in Republican primary politics.
Republican primary voters in South Carolina will render the next decision at the ballot box on Aug. 11, 2026. If no candidate clears a majority, state rules trigger a runoff, though a date for any second round would depend on the initial result.
Succession within political families is an old story in South Carolina, as happened before. Strom Thurmond held a South Carolina Senate seat for 48 years until 2003, a record for longevity that anchored a dynasty of state Republican power. When Thurmond stepped aside, the seat passed to Lindsey Graham, who held it until his death. The chain of custody over that political franchise now falls to voters weighing whether to keep it in the Graham family.
