Donald J. Trump highlighted suspected vandalism at the Washington Monument Reflecting Pool following the arrest of a former Olympic canoeist. Former Olympian David Hearn was indicted on property destruction charges over the incident, though he maintained he was merely examining the pool’s peeling lining during a bike ride.

Video transcript All Trump wants to do is build big, beautiful ballrooms, arches, fountains, so our cities reflect the greatness of our republic. Unfortunately, for America 250, the reflecting pool has become tedious ground zero. Are the contractors who did the initial work for the reflecting pool to blame for the current condition, or is it vandals? No, vandals. You know, we have a 290 to 300 foot (about 91.4 meters) slit right through it, probably from a box cutter or a knife of some kind. We had people lifting up the base. It’s not a lot of damage, but we’ll probably have to let the water out and refix it. Did the contractors do it? Well, we don’t know. But the president says people are pouring chemicals into the reflecting pool, carving up the bottom with knives. Not only is the National Guard standing watch, but concerned citizens are keeping an eye out for sabotage. Five people are arrested and five people are under investigation right now. And it’s the same thing. In addition to that, we put brand new, beautiful grass all around. They put these massive letters on the grass. You probably know about that, right? And they said 8647. They probably got that from the dirty cup coming. The park police arrested a former Olympic canoeist, you know. Records show he’s an Obama donor who’s been arrested by park police before. The Olympian Democrat donor was charged with a misdemeanor—destruction of government property—and he told the AP he’s just a concerned citizen. Well, this curious and concerned citizen is now being repped by one of the most famous Democrat lawyers in the country. I think we know what’s going on here. Trump went to get a look at the pool himself, and he didn’t like what he saw, so he ordered immediate repairs. Typical. Trump’s trying to drain the swamp, but the Democrats are trying to keep it dirty. All this money—$1.1 million—for y’all to watch pond scum? I know money’s really being spent well for y’all to watch pond scum? All right! All right! All right! All right! Let’s go LP! Let’s go! And the media, they didn’t send a reporter to the border for years. I’ve never seen a correspondent on the South Side of Chicago, Skid Row. But now they found their new Watergate. The Democrats can’t build high-speed rail or charging stations, and have you seen the Obama library? They can’t build things even if you give them 20 years and a billion bucks. Now, if you believe America was founded on racism and greed and colonialism, then yeah, you don’t think we deserve majestic monuments and ballrooms and clean fountains and statues that glorify our nation’s history and heritage. And cleanliness is godliness, I was told. Trump knows he has beautiful properties all over the world. My mom has been to one of them. Not a Trump fan, even she said it was tasteful. Let the man cook.

President Trump is the author of The Art of the Deal, Think Like a Billionaire, and Think Big. Analyst and Trump supporter Rod Martin points to The Art of the Deal, Trump's 1987 book, as an explanation of his deal-making philosophy: making big announcements, pivoting often in public statements and, Martin says, ultimately getting what he wanted all along. Critics contend that Trump's books were published decades ago or were aimed at making money, not shedding light. "Generally," Martin said, "critics don't read The Art of the Deal. If they did, they would understand."
