Trump Sets 100% Tariff on Generic Drug Imports After Two-Year Grace Period
Trump announces a phased tariff schedule on generic drugs to force pharmaceutical production back to the United States, threatening rates of up to 200%.
WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump announced a phased tariff schedule on imported generic drugs, threatening rates of up to 200% to force pharmaceutical production back onto American soil.
Generic drugs will carry a zero-percent tariff for two years, then a 100% levy for one year and 200% thereafter, Trump said in the post. The measure spares patented, branded, and innovative drugs.
“The objective of this Policy is to protect the people of the United States,” Trump said, framing the escalating tariffs as a penalty for companies that decline to build plant and equipment inside the country in time.
The schedule targets the low-cost medicines that fill most prescriptions in the country, raising the prospect of higher costs for pharmacies and patients if manufacturers do not relocate before the grace period ends.
Here is the full post on Truth Social: “Effective August 1st, 2026, all Generic Drugs being brought into the United States will continue to have a TARIFF of ZERO PERCENT for a two year period of time, after which the TARIFF will be raised to 100% for a one year period of time, and 200% thereafter. This is done in order to RESHORE Generic Pharmaceutical Production into America, with a penalty to those Companies that decide not to build Plant and Equipment within the stated period of time given to them. The objective of this Policy is to protect the people of the United States. The Policy on Patented, Branded, or Innovative Drugs, which has been so successful, will remain as is. Pharmaceutical Facilities are being built, at a level never seen before, all over the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter! Trump” on July 21, 2026 at 6:54 PM ET.
This is the first message released by Trump today. On average, Trump produces roughly 15 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025.
The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 6 of his 469 posts over the last 30 days focused on tariffs.
The stakes fall heaviest on the companies that supply the bulk of American medicine cabinets. Generic manufacturers, many with plants in India and China, would need to build costly domestic facilities or pass steep duties down the supply chain. Firms already investing in domestic plants gain a protected market, while importers unwilling to relocate stand to lose.
The policy extends Trump’s broader tariff campaign, which has already reshaped trade in autos, steel, and semiconductors. Pharmaceuticals have long drawn scrutiny because a large share of active ingredients and finished generics come from abroad, a dependency that pandemic-era shortages exposed.
For the average US reader, the announcement touches the price of everyday prescriptions. Generics fill most retail prescriptions in the country. Any pass-through of a 100% or 200% tariff could raise out-of-pocket costs at the pharmacy counter if domestic capacity does not expand in time.
This has happened before. Trump has repeatedly used escalating tariff threats as leverage to pull manufacturing back to the United States, applying the same reshoring logic to autos and metals earlier in his term.
The next decision rests with drugmakers and federal trade officials, who must set implementation rules ahead of the August 1st, 2026 effective date. The higher 100% and 200% rates begin two years after that date, though agency guidance to enforce them has not been announced.
Using trade duties to reshape an entire industry isn’t the first time Washington has reached for tariffs to protect domestic makers. In 1930, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act raised duties on more than 20,000 imported goods, according to britannica.com. Trading partners retaliated, global trade contracted sharply, and economists later blamed the law for deepening the Great Depression, a cautionary chapter that shadowed every American president who reached for sweeping tariffs afterward.
