WHITE HOUSE — Donald Trump urged Republicans to terminate the Senate filibuster or risk never electing a Republican president again in a Truth Social post on July 5, 2026 at 1:19 PM EST.
Here is the full post on truthsocial: “There is nothing Americans can’t do except get Voter ID (Identification), Proof of Citizenship or, most importantly of all, TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER (which the Democrats will do immediately upon gaining Office, and add 2 more States, 4 more Senators, 8 more Congressmen, at least 20 Electoral Votes, and it will be impossible for a Republican to ever be elected President again. I don’t want to be the last Republican President!). GET SMART REPUBLICANS, IF YOU DON’T, YOU WON’T BE IN OFFICE FOR LONG! Trump”
Trump tied the appeal to voter identification and proof of citizenship, arguing Republicans must act before Democrats reclaim power. He warned that Democrats would add two states, four senators, eight House members and at least 20 Electoral College votes, locking Republicans out of the presidency. “I don’t want to be the last Republican President!” Trump wrote.
The filibuster requires 60 votes to advance most legislation in the Senate, giving the minority party power to block bills. Trump has repeatedly pressed Senate Republicans to scrap the rule during his term.
Elections remain a dominant theme in Trump’s recent messaging. In the last 30 days, 111 of 525 Trump posts were on the topic “Elections”.
