Trump Warns He’ll Be Last Republican President If Senate Keeps Filibuster

Trump says Senate Republicans must terminate the filibuster or Democrats will use it to grant statehood to Puerto Rico and D.C., permanently shifting electoral power.

— Donald J. Trump warned that he will be the last Republican president if Senate Republicans refuse to eliminate the legislative filibuster, claiming Democrats will exploit the rule to reshape the American electoral map.

Here is the full post on truthsocial: “If Senate Republicans don’t TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, the Dumocrats will, and I will be, despite how well our Party is doing, the last Republican President! The Dumocrats will vote in Puerto Rico (4% Republican Vote), and Washington, D.C. (3% Republican Vote), pick up 4 Senators, 8 Congressmen/women, tremendous numbers of Popular and Electoral College Votes and, importantly, control the Voting Mechanisms and Systems, both Legal and otherwise, throughout the United States. It will be impossible for Republicans to ever win an Election again. In other words, it will be THE END OF AMERICA! Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! Trump” on September 21, 2026 at 1:18 PM ET.

This is Trump’s 6th message released today, and the last post was 1 hour ago, and it is not part of a thread. On average, Trump produces 17 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025. The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 1 of his 6 posts over the last 30 days classified as Elections posts.

Trump’s post argued that Democrats, if given the opportunity, would grant statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. — territories he described as voting Republican at rates of 4% and 3% respectively — and thereby add 4 Senate seats and 8 House seats to the Democratic column. The resulting shift in Popular Vote and Electoral College totals, combined with Democratic control over voting systems, would make it impossible for Republicans to win future elections, he said.

Republican resistance to eliminating the filibuster has been firm. When Trump first pushed the so-called nuclear option in late 2025 to reopen a government shutdown without Democratic votes, several Republican senators pushed back immediately, according to nbcnews. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said he would resign from the Senate if Republicans abolished the filibuster. Sen. John Curtis of Utah called himself a “firm no,” saying, “The filibuster forces us to find common ground in the Senate. Power changes hands, but principles shouldn’t,” according to nbcnews. Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas called weakening the filibuster a “nonstarter,” according to nbcnews.

The stakes of the filibuster fight extend beyond procedure. Trump’s post framed the issue as an existential threat to Republican electoral viability, tying it directly to the prospect of D.C. and Puerto Rico statehood. Utah Sen. Mike Lee, who led the Senate push for the SAVE America Act, warned that how Republicans handle the bill “could impact not only the November midterm elections, but also the Senate GOP leadership elections,” according to pbs.

Several Republican senators facing competitive midterm races — including Maine Sen. Susan Collins, Ohio Sen. Jon Husted, and Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan — are navigating the pressure campaign as they return home to campaign, according to pbs. Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate majority, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune has consistently said they lack the votes to pass the SAVE America Act or change the filibuster rules, according to pbs.

No date has been announced for a Senate vote on filibuster reform or the SAVE America Act. Thune has urged Trump and other pressure campaigners to help him find the votes needed to move forward, according to pbs.
