Trump Posts AI Image Placing Himself Between Generals Patton and MacArthur
Trump shares a fabricated image showing himself in a four-star general's uniform beside two World War II commanders, drawing stolen-valor accusations.
WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald J. Trump placed himself between two of America’s most celebrated World War II commanders in an AI-generated image, drawing accusations of stolen valor.
The fabricated picture depicts Trump wearing a four-star general’s uniform with medals and ribbons, flanked by General George S. Patton and General Douglas MacArthur against a battlefield of smoke, fire and tanks. Trump has never served in the U.S. military, and he received four draft deferments during the Vietnam War era, including a medical deferment for bone spurs, according to Google.
Here is the full post on truthsocial: “Patton, Trump, MacArthur” on August 6, 2026 at 8:29 PM ET.
This is Trump’s 11th message released today, and the last post was 3 hours ago, and it is not part of a thread. On average, Trump produces 18 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025. The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 13 of his 433 posts over the last 30 days classified as Trump Business & Personal Brand posts.
Critics said the image amounted to stolen valor, when a person takes credit for military accomplishments or service they never earned. Activist and news influencer Aaron Parnas shared a screenshot with the caption “Trump accused of stolen valor,” noting the president wore honors he had not earned, according to Google. The White House Press Office did not respond to questions about the post’s intended message.
The image carries several signs of AI generation. Smoke stacks behind the men point in opposite directions, Patton wears a helmet without a chin strap, and MacArthur’s uniform shows what appears to be upside-down Army corporal’s insignia, according to Google. The picture also gives both generals two stars, though Patton was a four-star general and MacArthur a five-star general. Scans by Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s Verify tool suggested the fake originated from OpenAI’s tools, according to Google.

The two men Trump chose rank among the most decorated field commanders in American history. Patton led American forces in the 1943 invasion of Sicily that helped push Italy out of the war, according to comicsands.com. MacArthur led the 1944 campaign to reclaim the Philippines and personally received the formal Japanese surrender in August 1945. Patton died in 1945 and MacArthur in 1964, making any real photograph with Trump, born in 1946, impossible.
For the average reader, the episode underscores how AI-generated imagery now moves through political messaging at speed, blurring the line between satire and fabrication. The commander-in-chief title Trump holds as president is civilian and does not grant general’s stars.
This has happened before. Trump has repeatedly shared AI-generated images of himself in heroic or exalted poses, and fact-checkers have flagged the practice as part of his social-media output. Snopes routinely fact-checks claims about his truthsocial posts, and it rated the Patton-MacArthur post authentic to his account, according to Google.
No further official statement has been scheduled, and a date for any White House response has not been announced.
Presidents borrowing the glow of generals is not new. Theodore Roosevelt built his 1900 rise on the charge up Kentucky’s San Juan Heights in Cuba in 1898, riding Rough Rider fame into the vice presidency and then the White House within three years, according to independent.co.uk. Dwight Eisenhower converted five-star command of the 1944 Normandy invasion into two presidential terms. Roosevelt had earned his uniform under fire, a distinction that set his image apart from a fabricated one.
