Air Force Awards Carahsoft $82.9 Million for VMware Cloud Software
The Reston, Virginia, IT reseller received a firm-fixed-price deal to renew VMware Cloud Foundation licenses across the Air Force Network, with work due by August 5, 2030.
RESTON, VIRGINIA — Carahsoft Technology Corp., the largest government IT reseller in the U.S., received an $82.9 million Air Force contract to renew VMware Cloud Foundation software licenses across the service’s network, as announced on war.gov.
The firm-fixed-price award covers software licenses and product support for the Air Force Network. Fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance funds of $14.2 million were obligated at the time of award. Work will run Air Force-wide across government locations and is expected to finish by August 5, 2030. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Maxwell Air Force Base Gunter Annex, Alabama, is the contracting activity under contract FA8772-26-F-B088, a sole-source acquisition.
Carahsoft, founded in 2004 and headquartered in Reston, Virginia, describes itself as The Trusted Government IT Solutions Provider that supports federal, state, local, education and healthcare buyers according to ibm.com. The company sits at the center of the VMware public-sector supply chain following Broadcom’s acquisition of the virtualization vendor. The deal marks the second contract awarded to Carahsoft in 2026, lifting its total contract value for the year to $94.9 million, according to firestore contract records. It ranks as the 152nd Department of Defense contract awarded in Virginia during 2026 and stands as one of seven Defense contracts issued nationwide on August 5, 2026.
The award benefits Carahsoft and Broadcom, the VMware owner, by locking in four years of licensing revenue from a single military customer. Taxpayers carry the cost, and the sole-source structure means no rival reseller competed for the work. The Air Force gains continuity of the virtualization platform that underpins its network operations.
Sole-source software renewals of this size are routine within the Defense IT portfolio, which spans a wide range of values. This award falls between the Air Force portfolio’s 2026 year-to-date minimum of $17 and its maximum of $5.6 billion, according to firestore contract records. It is not the largest deal Carahsoft has secured, a record that stands at $820.5 million.
Few everyday consumers touch the Air Force Network directly, yet the contract shapes the software that keeps military communications and logistics systems running. Continuity of those licenses reduces the risk of service disruption for airmen who rely on the platform daily.
This has happened before. The Air Force awarded Carahsoft an $81 million contract in May 2020 to help the Space Command and Control Division build software development and information technology operations according to wikipedia.org. The Defense Information Systems Agency entered a five-year, $970 million blanket purchase agreement for Broadcom software focused on the VMware Cloud Foundation platform in March 2026 according to wikipedia.org.
The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center will oversee performance and any follow-on decisions tied to the contract. A date for the next award or renewal decision has not been announced.
Carahsoft’s government reselling has drawn legal scrutiny before. A 2010 lawsuit accused Carahsoft and VMware of overcharging government customers, and the firms settled with the Justice Department for $75.5 million while denying wrongdoing according to wikipedia.org. In 2023, the U.S. government opened a case examining whether the reseller conspired to rig bids and inflate prices when it resold products according to wikipedia.org. Those disputes left Carahsoft’s role as a dominant Defense software channel intact.
This contract represents the 2nd contract awarded to Carahsoft Technology Corp., in 2026, bringing the company’s total contract value for the year to $94,884,761. It is also the 152nd Department of Defense contract awarded in Virginia during 2026. While this is not the largest contract ever awarded to Carahsoft Technology Corp., whose record stands at $820,450,000, it is notable within the Air Force portfolio. Specifically, it falls between the 2026 Air Force portfolio’s year-to-date minimum of $17 and maximum of $5,600,000,000. Overall, this award was announced among 7 Department of Defense contracts issued nationwide on August 5, 2026.
