“For two and a half centuries, our American republic has stood as the crowning achievement of human history,” Trump said during his keynote remarks on the National Mall Saturday night (see breitbart). He spoke for just under 40 minutes to cap off the Freedom 250 Salute to America celebration. “This country is the home of freedom. This is the land of liberty,” he said.
Trump touted American exceptionalism and Manifest Destiny throughout the address. “No people have done more good, shown more courage, made more progress, righted more injustice, or achieved more greatness than you, the American people,” he said. He recited the “timeless truths” laid out in the Declaration of Independence and called the U.S. Constitution “the most righteous political document ever conceived.”
The president honored American heroes during the speech, including Sgt. William Carney, who escaped slavery and became the first Black American to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for keeping an American flag from touching the ground while wounded in the Civil War. Army Col. Paris Davis, a Medal of Honor recipient, joined Trump on stage to salute the flag draped over President Abraham Lincoln’s casket. Trump also cited figures from Davy Crockett and Wyatt Earp to the Wright Brothers, Annie Oakley and President Teddy Roosevelt.
A storm forced an evacuation late in the evening before doors reopened shortly before the 11:00 p.m. hour. Officials estimated 375,000 people attended during the day, with roughly 150,000 remaining to hear the remarks (see breitbart). “We have thrived and flourished because our founders were great, our cause was just, our people are brave, our culture is exceptional, and our destiny is written by God,” Trump said.
