— Donald J. Trump renewed his accusations against former President Barack Obama in a Truth Social post, calling for a federal investigation of Obama and his entire administration over unsubstantiated claims of campaign spying and election rigging.

Here is the full post on truthsocial: “Crooked Barack Hussein Obama is the WORST President in the history of our Country, and everybody knows it! He and his group of Radical Left thugs SPIED on my campaign, and then tried to RIG the Election against the American People. Obama knew EVERYTHING, and he did NOTHING but LIE about it. The Fake News Media protects Barack Obama at all costs, but the TRUTH is finally coming out. We won the 2024 Election in a LANDSLIDE, and we will NEVER again let them steal an Election from the American People. Obama and his entire Administration should be INVESTIGATED. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” on September 9, 2026 at 2:00 PM ET.

This is Trump’s 1st message released today, and the last post was 19 days ago, and it is not part of a thread. On average, Trump produces 17 posts per day since his inauguration on January 20, 2025. The move fits a broader pattern in Trump’s recent messaging, with 32 of his 65 posts over the last 30 days classified as Elections posts.

Trump’s post presented no evidence for the spying or election-rigging claims. The accusations echo remarks he made in the Oval Office in July 2025, when he accused Obama of treason without providing evidence regarding the 2016 presidential election, according to abcnews.com. “This was treason. This was every word you can think of. They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody’s ever even imagined, even in other countries,” Trump said at that time, according to abcnews.com.

Obama’s office issued a rare public rebuke of the earlier accusations. “Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response,” Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush said. “But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction,” according to NBC News.

Rodenbush also said the Trump administration misrepresented the intelligence documents it cited. “Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio,” Rodenbush said, according to NBC News.

Former senior Justice Department and FBI officials dismissed the push for new investigations. A Trump-appointed special counsel and Republican senators had already investigated the claims and found no crimes, according to NBC News. Those officials called the renewed effort “absurd,” “bananas,” and “insane,” according to nbcnews.com.

The wiretapping strand of Trump’s accusations has a longer history. In 2017, Trump accused then-President Obama of wire-tapping Trump Tower during the 2016 election campaign. Those claims lacked any supporting evidence, and Obama’s spokesman and former U.S. intelligence chief James Clapper denied that any wiretap had been ordered, according to bbc.com. FBI Director James Comey told the House Intelligence Committee that he had “no information” supporting the wiretapping tweets, and the Justice Department found no evidence to support the allegations, according to bbc.com. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr said there were “no indications” that Trump Tower was under surveillance by any element of the U.S. government before or after Election Day 2016, according to bbc.com.

For the average American voter, the post signals that election-integrity disputes from 2016 and 2020 remain a live political issue, with the sitting president using his platform to press for criminal accountability against his predecessor.

This dispute between Trump and Obama over election legitimacy has surfaced repeatedly across multiple election cycles. As far back as October 2016, Obama called Trump’s pre-election claims of a rigged vote “no laughing matter” and said such rhetoric was “dangerous” for democracy, according to voanews.com. “When you try to sow the seeds of doubt in people’s minds about the legitimacy of our elections, that undermines our democracy,” Obama said while campaigning in Florida that year, according to voanews.com.

The next decision point rests with the Justice Department and the unnamed federal prosecutor Attorney General Pam Bondi instructed to pursue a grand jury investigation. No date for a formal charging decision or grand jury report has been announced.
