Army’s Lubas Nominated to Lead XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg

Army Maj. Gen. John W. Lubas was nominated for a third star and command of one of the service’s largest deployable formations.

The Department of War announced the nomination for appointment to lieutenant general on July 16, 2026 at 4:18 PM ET, with an assignment as commanding general of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg in North Carolina, according to war.gov. Lubas now leads the 3rd Infantry Division and Fort Stewart in Georgia, a heavy armored division that traces its lineage to World War I. The nomination advances to the Senate, which must confirm every officer promoted to general or flag rank under Article II of the Constitution. Lawmakers on the Senate Armed Services Committee vet each nominee before the full chamber votes, a process that can move within days or stretch for months when holds delay military nominations.

The XVIII Airborne Corps calls itself America’s Contingency Corps, the headquarters the Army turns to first for rapid deployment anywhere in the world. It oversees the 82nd Airborne Division, the 101st Airborne Division, the 3rd Infantry Division, the 10th Mountain Division and other units, making its commander responsible for tens of thousands of soldiers. The post has served as a proving ground for officers who later reached the Army’s most senior ranks. A third star carries weight beyond the individual officer. The move would place Lubas in charge of the force that spearheaded deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, and it would open the top job at the 3rd Infantry Division for a successor.
