Trump declares cease-fire with Iran over as talks continue

Trump agrees to extend talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran while telling Tehran the cease-fire has ended.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald Trump has declared the cease-fire with the Islamic Republic of Iran over while agreeing to keep talking.

Trump said the United States will continue negotiations at Tehran’s request. He said the cease-fire between the two governments has ended. He addressed his message directly to Iranian leaders.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a country in West Asia, historically known as Persia, with a population near 92 million and Tehran as its capital and largest city (see wikipedia.org). Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979 after a referendum on April 1 followed the overthrow of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (see ebsco.com). The United States backed a 1953 coup that ousted Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq and reinstated the shah, whose authoritarian rule fed the discontent that carried Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power (see ebsco.com).

The Persian Gulf and its narrow waterways have drawn armed conflict for centuries. British and Portuguese forces battled for control of Hormuz in the early 17th century, and the Anglo-Persian capture of the island in 1622 ended Portuguese dominance in the gulf (see wikipedia.org). Later rulers who staked their standing on control of the strait found their fortunes rise and fall with the tides of the same contested water.
